Outside the Book–03.17.2013

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all!  I’m typing in green just for the occasion…I just hope this shows up on the blog!

Well, if you are wondering what has been going on outside the book with me, I can sum it up in one word: SICK!  My son came down with a respiratory cold at the beginning of last week, my husband caught it and it ended up as a sinus infection and an ear infection for him.  I caught it and while I’ve been able to ward off any infections, I still fell pretty hard.  Then, my daughter came down with pink eye AND an ear infection.  Right now, we’re treating the pink eye with drops and hoping the ear infection clears up on its own…but it looks like the ear infection is getting worse, so we’ll probably have to go the antibiotics route on that as well.  Sigh!

Totally an aside…you know what makes me happy?  Well, lots of things, but right now I’m watching a Piano Guys concert off my DVR and, yes, their music makes me happy.  You know what makes me unhappy?  The fact that their Portland concert was sold out before I ever even knew about it!

Anyway, most of my time these days has been taken up playing nurse or trying to find some downtime to recover myself.  I have been working my way through some books, but they are for solicited reviews and they aren’t scheduled until the 28th of this month and then early April, although I do have another review ready to go for the 25th, so stay tuned.

Don’t forget about the giveaway for Margo Krasne’s Appearances and Other Stories.  It ends TONIGHT, so hurry up and enter!

I recently wrote about using the Partner Program with Powell’s books…and I’m so happy that I switched over!  I go by the Cedar Hills Powell’s store at least once a week so I feel like it is far more “tangible” than Amazon.  Also, they have this great thing going…if you leave a review for a book, you are entered into the next day’s Daily Dose.  They choose one review from the previous day and feature it and, if you are chosen, you win!  The prize is a $20 store credit, but if no one claims their prize the day before, the prize compounds.  Well, I cross-posted my review of My Beloved World and I won today’s Daily Dose!  Better yet, no one claimed the prize yesterday, so I won $40…which I’ve already spent, of course!  I ordered 3 books—The Passing Bells, Enchantments: A Novel of Rasputin’s Daughter and the Romanovs, and The Midwife of Hope River.  All of these have been well-reviewed on other blogs, so I’m really looking forward to getting into them.  Another plus (for me) for Powell’s is that I can have my orders shipped to the Cedar Hills store and then pick them up there…and not have to pay shipping!

I spent a little time browsing Pinterest and trying to find some amusing graphic to post here.  I did find a number of funny items, but many more obnoxious, crude or just unfunny pins.  Then, I found this…how true!

Forgive me for not embedding this, but that doesn't seem to be working with the new Pinterest layout. The link is here.
